MSM’s strategy of tension

"The strategy of tension (Italian: strategia della tensione) is a tactic that aims to divide, manipulate, and control public opinion using fear, propaganda, disinformation, psychological warfare, agents provocateurs, and false flag terrorist actions."

This is the constant strategy of mainstream media (MSM), just in their last "invasion" news and headlines ploy to stir up fear of and tension at China over a non-existent plan plan to seize Pag-asa Island that the Philippines presently occupy. It also asserted that 2014 is China's opportunity to seize it because of the misfortunes of the Philippines. BS. China can do that anytime it pleases but it won't as it would be diplomatic foolishness.

Philippine MSM is one huge farce with major newspapers and broadcast outlets controlled by the financial-economic ruling class that thrive on the umbilical cord that connects it to the Western financial system, i.e. Wall Street, the City of London and the Bank of International Settlements. The country's biggest corporations are dominated by foreign capital which is already admitted to be foreign controlled.

The Philippine MSM engaged on a strategy of tension against China, as well as many segments of the international media. In the Philippines one foreign writer called on Filipinos "not to take the bait" of China, but what bait? The "invasion" story was a non-story in the first place. This foreign writer in the Manila Times once wrote that "the Filipinos need foreigners" to help it get out of the economic rut it is in, forgetting the fact that it is foreigner, particularly the US and Britain that screwed the Philippines for the past century. There is a horde of Western writers spread out in MSM in the Philippines promoting the opening up of the economy without limits and pushing the rigged financial markets.

It is not surprising that Ben Kritz of the Manila Times will be accusing China of the "invasion," the "new fishing rules" and, earlier, the ADIZ aggression. What they do not write about is the revival of the US prodded revival of Japan's capacity for aggression, the US missile defense system being set up to ring China, Japan's "nationalization" of 280 new islands, ad nausea. The Western powers are confronted with the dusk of their powers, as the news of China this early in 2014 overtaking the US as the top trading nation of the world and its vaulting to having the third largest gold reserves next only to Germany (which cannot get its gold back from the US) and the US.

I am not surprised that after that article on "The 'invasion' Ploy" came out, the day after my e-mail was hacked and totally wiped out, losing all my contacts and messages accumulated over years. I got texts from relatives and friends about receiving mail from me frorm Ukraine asking for financial help as I allegedly met an accident there. Of course, hundreds of thousands of others have received such fraud mails and nobody is fooled by them, so they are just covers for special hacking operations just as they did to my e-mail. But then there are others who would like to hack my communications to inconvenience me.

The strategy of tension and mayhem is inherent in our political system. The exposé of Sen. Bong Revilla of BS Aquino's bribery of senators to vote in favor of his vendetta against the Supreme Court chief justice who presided over the return of the Hacienda Luisita to farmers is an example.

Revilla acceded to BS Aquino's request and convicted Corona against all principles of separation of powers, due process, non-discriminatory justice and fair play, so what does that make all of them — they're all corrupt, unprincipled, self-serving — but all the better to obfuscate the real issues in the land such as the perpetuation of neo-colonialism and exploitation such as in the power sector.

For any individual human being or any collective of such individuals to achieve any goal, be it a village raising a child or a nation building an sovereign state and economy, requires focus on a series of activities that builds upon on another. A building or road or hydro-electric dam begins with the foundation, the education of a citizen begins with the ABCs and ends in a wholistic view of life and the universe, and national consciousness and unity are built on a foundation of understanding the particular people's history and destiny. The MSM should have a role in focusing the nation, but in the Philippines the MSM is just a tool of the strategy of tension that addles the national mind and divides the consciousness of the nation into a daily kaleidoscope of disjointed, Picasso-que abstract.

The invasion ploy

I received this text last week: “Dangerously inaccurate title of Jarius Bondoc today (Filipino traitors thrive as China readies invasion) in Philstar. TY.” The piece said, “China is preparing to seize Pag-asa Island Philippine territory. As reported by the Qianzhan (Prospects) business and strategy info site, the Chinese military has drawn up an attack plan for execution this year.” I looked up Qianzhan (Prospects), Google asked if it was Qianzshen (with an “e”). When I did find Qianzh(a)n and accessed its “About us” for ownership, history, funding, it only describes that it is a “ special market research institute” which is hardly a field that would be into “invasion” and military news developments.

A slew of provocative headlines worldwide followed: a certain ChanKai Yee in China Daily Mail (“…not affiliated in any way with The China Daily or the government of the PROC ” the news site says): “Chinese troops to seize Zhongye Island back from the Philippines in 2014” and “China and Philippines: The reasons a battle for Zhongye (Pag-asa) Island seems unavoidable”; in Western web media “China Plans To Seize South China Sea Island From Philippines, Says ‘Battle Will Be Restricted’” by Tyler Durden (ZeroHedge); “What’s China up to now?” Val Abelgas in amboy Perry Diaz’s Balita-USA, then “What if China Did Invade Pag-asa Island?” by Carl Thayer in an Australian publication The Diplomat, — ad nausea.

The Chinese “invasion” of Pag-asa story came just after another tension building item in the local and international media, about the “new” fishery regulation of Hainan province under which China places the jurisdiction of most of its China Sea territorial claims. The “new” rules were loudly denounced by the Philippines and the US as “aggression” and “provocation” while Vietnam first spoke through a “fishing association authority” followed by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs much later reasserting its claim and less rabidly describing China’s rules as “illegal.” China’s response addressed mainly the US:

“For more than 30 years, China’s relevant fisheries laws and regulations have been consistently implemented in a normal way, and have never caused any tension… If someone feels the need to say that technical amendments to local fisheries regulations implemented many years ago will cause tensions in the region and pose a threat to regional stability, then I can only say that if this does not stem from a lack of basic common sense, then it must be due to an ulterior motive.” In other words, the same fishery laws have been in existence for the past three decades and they never generated this reaction before, why should it be stirring up this year?

Previous year’s saw controversies raised over the “fisheries rules” but noticeably less strident that this year. Throughout those years, there had never been attempts at serious implementation of any police action in connection with the rules. Thus, the rules “never cause any tension” — at least never to the level of what we have seen the past weeks. Before the “fishery rules” issue could die down the “invasion” story suddenly emerged to sustain a barrage of anti-China reports and opinion pieces in Philippine and Western media.

The Kalayaan groups of islands is governed by the Philippines from Bit-onon town on Pag-asa island. It’s Mayor, Eugenio Bito-onon Jr says it an area of harmonious intermingling of Asian fishermen dong what they have been doing for centuries, “…if you go there, fishermen from Hong Kong, Hainan, Vietnam, Malaysia go about their usual business casually, even fishing side by side at the reef…But if you read the papers, you see that (officials) just don’t stop talking, as if war will begin tomorrow…” This he said months ago when media stirred roughly as Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning sailed around the disputed seas. Bit-onon has issued any SOS since the so-called “new fishery rules” either.

The real reason for the surge in eruption of tension-building news and opinion items may be discernible from the effects. The sensational “fishery rules” and “invasion” stories abruptly ended the huge international backlash against Japanese PM Shinzo Abe’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine of the “class A” World War II war criminals of Japan was shunted aside. It has also divert attention from BS Aquino’s drop in January poll ratings again. The confirmation that the sensational stories were just news management and propaganda ploys is the Jan. 13 statement of Foreign Affairs spokesman Hernandez admitting, “I’m not aware of any plans of China to take over Pag-asa Island this year…”

As for the “Filipino traitors… who give away Philippine metals to Chinese miners,” I just came back from the north of the country and I am told: A certain politician exchanged mining rights for the freedom from Hong Kong imprisonment of his wayward child. When I went south they told me — the Japanese carting off ships upon ships of ores.

Harmony or war

First, a story about the good that a genuine global "community" can do which the NYT described as "…displaying unusual international harmony…": the Russian research ship Akademik Shokalskiy carrying multi-national scientists (ironically, "global warming" researchers), and tourists and journalists got trapped in 13-feet thick Antarctic ice last Dec. 27. First the Chinese icebreaker ship "snow Dragon" and then an Australian icebreaker ship rushed to the rescue and both were also trapped in the massive engulfing freeze up, but the Chinese ship had on board a helicopter which ferried the Shokalskiy's 52 passengers to safety. An US icebreaker ship is now also on its way to join the aid effort.

The story highlights a few important points: first, China's presence of the global stage is playing a positive role and this can only add to the international community's capabilities to enhance global harmony; secondly, no single nation can save mankind from the many gigantic universal challenges it faces from the overpowering natural forces of disruption and only combined human and technological resource can ensure adequate responses to them. If the spirit of the Shokalskiy rescue effort dominated the World's mind today then we can be assured of a peaceful and harmonious future for our children and generations to open the way for uninterrupted economic and human progress for all.

On the other side of the globe another event highlights the opposite track that humanity today can march on to. At exactly the time of the Shokalskiy drama was unfolding in the Antarctic the Prime Minster of Japan, Shinzo Abe, paid the first visit of any post-World War II Japanese premier to the Japanese war memorial called the Yasukuni Shrine commemorating several "Class A" war criminals including general and war time prime minister Hideki Tojo. This infuriated Japanese war victims China, South Korea, Taiwan and it elicited criticism even from the US. It should also infuriate Filipinos and their national leaders but it could not even ape its US master in this regard.

Prime Minister Abe's visit to Yasukuni Shrine aggravates the fact that the Japanese have never officially apologized for the invasion and cruelties they inflicted on their Asian neighbors, a fact that the US war factions have tolerated while it demanded the apology from Germany. The US has been tolerant of the Japanese militarist faction, to which Abe's family belongs, is that the US has always placed in reserve this militarist faction to serve as potential buffer to the rise of China and Russia. While the US has spread knowledge of German atrocities like the "Holocaust," the clear and incontrovertible atrocities by the Japanese such as the Nanjing Massacre has never been fully addressed.

The World has focused its attention on the response of China, one of the reactions highlighted by the international media is Chinese ambassador to London Liu Xiaoming's statement: "In the Harry Potter story, the dark wizard Voldemort dies hard because the seven horcruxes, which contain parts of his soul, have been destroyed. If militarism is like the haunting Voldemort of Japan, the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo is a kind of horcrux, representing the darkest parts of that nation's (Japan's) soul." In Asia Times Senan Fox, Professor at Kanazawa University in Japan, writes: "Respected Asia scholar professor Jeff Kingston… in an interview with the BBC, that Abe's actions were a deliberate provocation of China aimed at goading Beijing... heighten the Japanese public's sense of threat, and consequently enhance support for the nationalistic leader's plans to revise his country's constitution."

Indeed, the provocations from the Japanese war faction and its sponsors in the US have been mounting — starting with the government purchase of the Diaoyu (Senkaku) Islands effectively nationalizing them, drawing in and provoking China's government. Adding to the provocations are propaganda and disinformation from China's detractors, such as the recent controversy of China's Air Defense Zone Plan (ADIZ). We have discovered through John Hofilena of Global Research that "China Informed Japan of ADIZ 2010" with official documents: " — minutes of the informal meeting between the PLA officers and Japanese government officials at the China Foundation for International and Strategic Studies in Beijing on May 14 to 15, 2010 — show that China had already established its ADIZ... presented to the Japanese officials…" That's why China described Japan's recent objections as "hypocritical."

Remember too how the hundreds of "concrete blocks" supposedly set up by China in the Scarborough turned out to be anchors for US floating targets for their shooting exercises. "All wars start in the mind" as the Unesco preamble states, hence there are those who want to instill that war mentality now, and Shinzo Abe is one of them. China believes there may be war and Shinzo Abe is giving the reasons to affirm this; that's why China has to secure its front facing the sea.
